THE SECOND VANETTI AFFAIR

An unwarranted sequel to last year's The Blind Hypnotist, wherein publicity-hungry London mesmerist Jason Gait kidnapped screen goddess Elsie Vanetti but abandoned the stunt out of love for his victim. Now it's Elsie's fourth-rate actor hubby Hull who abducts the highly abductable Elsie (again the motive, unconvincingly, is publicity), and Galt--using hypnotism to disarm the bad guys--gets to play White-Knight-on-motorbike to Elsie's imprisoned-in-farmhouse damsel-in-distress. The unlikelihoods are crisply told, but only those skilled in the art of reader self-hypnosis will slip into a trance.
