FERNWOOD

Head -- well Abigail Prentice did go to Vassar, 1882 -- and shoulders above most little nurse novels, she comes to a deep southern plantation where everything is in full bloom including suspicions about who might have killed the lovely Celia -- which one of the variously attractive Barclay brothers -- leaving a buried gun, a bloodstained gown in the attic, and the specter of a horseman in the spirea. More generously plotted than most from a to b even if it never gets past c, and urgently unbosomed.
