THE ARROW AND THE LAMP: The Story of Psyche

An elegant new edition of one of Greek mythology's richest contributions to our literary heritage. Hodges, with many fine books to her credit, is especially noted for her wonderful Saint George and the Dragon (Caldecott Medal, 1985); her exemplary retelling here has the grace and clarity of a well-honed folk tale. Meanwhile, in her pellucid art, Diamond places delicately modeled, sculptural figures against soft, dramatically romantic landscapes and classical architecture where the spare use of detail emphasizes the story's universality. A pleasing variety of full-page illustrations, top-half double spreads, gently exceeded borders, and ornamental detail are harmoniously combined in the beautifully designed format. A serene blend of text and illustration--perfect for storytelling, sharing, or independent reading.
