A period story of Alaska in 1889 has a certain originality in its young marriage theme and goes to show that being ladylike and in the wilderness mix like oil and water. When Florence Monroe, whose father has imbued her with Victorian principles, marries Beldon Craig, they go off to his salmon saltery with the flush of young love upon them and high hopes for the future. But in the wilds, hard headed Florence is determined to be what she considers a model wife and a lady; there will be no breeches, gun carrying or long hunting trips for her. Easy going Beldon's advice rubs off and then rubs- to the point where Florence, who is brave and accommodating at heart, goes off on her own to prove herself, is lost, found and then realizes the need to live in and not above, nature. Hardy and interesting all the way.
