THE MASTER OF AYSGARTH

A gothic son of godfather as Alice Chell, orphaned, comes to stay with the man who served in that capacity only to find that he's dead and that Aysgarth Abbey, a both literal and famous ruin, is in the hands of justifiably bitter Miles. There are others on the premises including an archaeologist who is actually searching for the ancient cross sufficiently valuable to be the salvation of the Abbey or an incentive to murder. The usual typecast characters, even if one of them is called Eweretta, but a somewhat better story which moves with celerity from the post chaise to the chaise lounge.
