This is an exciting discovery among the excellent Yale Series of Younger Poets. In commenting on her work, Stephen Benet says ""I do not mean that this is interesting and moving poetry because it was written by a Negro."" This might be supplemented by saying that the fact that Margaret Walker is a Negro has given deep roots of natural gift for song and rhythm which make her expression in verse as natural as breathing. I found the first half profoundly moving; she has spoken for her people. The balance shows her flexibility and varied gift.
