Another of the author's chronicles of a psychopath's effect on placid, middle-class lives (The Scent of Fear), this time in the quiet English village of Didbury. Neighbors Marion Quilter and Laura Burdock, driving home from a ballet performance, are threatened and harassed by drunk, frustrated bully Mick Harvey. They report the incident and Harvey's license number to the police. As a result, he loses his job and only real goal in life--to be a long-distance truck driver. So, accidentally discovering the identity of his accusers, Harvey proceeds to take his revenge in a rampage that affects other innocent lives as well. All in all: too much sentimental rambling about the domestic problems of Laura, husband Tom, Marion and her young nephew Peter; and the menace is diffused and sporadic, the final showdown anticlimatic. Yorke has done this kind of thing with more impact and finesse in the past.
