THE MATING INSTINCT

A pair of author-naturalists with their interests aroused and their eyes open to the parallels and peculiarities, both physical and habitual, of the mating cycle's grand design, write with gentle wit and a true biological insight that make their book entertaining and informative. Within chapters on the different stages of wooing, winning and weaning, are the characteristics of body and behaviour typical of a wide variety of animals. In no special hierarchical order, the text is perhaps more readable for its informality and with its easy shifts in reference to all kinds- insects, mice, crabs, octopi, man, reindeer, whales, etc.- the facets of the panorama of ""that old feeling"" come into focus with amazing clarity.
