A superb rendering of the text of the King James version of the Old Testament, skillfully abridged and arranged in historical sequence, by Dr. Samuel Terrien, of the Union Theological Seminary, provides the vehicle for Mrs. de Angeli's lovely pictures. Thirty one are in four color; 128 in black and white, plus some chapter heads and decorations. Through these pictures she has captured the very look and feel of the sundrenched hills of the land of the Old Testament, with their rocky barrenness, occasional lushness under sparse water. The people, too, may well have looked as she has pictured them- though a bit more rugged and swarthy. But the clothes and the minutiae of living she has taken from research and seeing for herself and arriving at a compromise between the two. This promises to be -- as of today's knowledge- one of the big books for holiday distribution, and a book for permanent family possession wherever there are growing children.
