THE WATER-CARRIER'S SECRETS

The author is a Spaniard born in Mexico and now married to an American, she has written this story so that we will understand her country better. It is illustrated by Leonard Welagard. There is great courage, piety, quiet humor and even romance in this tale of Juan de Dios, a water -carrier, the oldest of a large family. After an earthquake his family adopts a little girl, Dolores, and he decides then and there that when he is older he will marry her. But Juan with his love of peace cannot enjoy modern improvements as he calls them and their lives turn out differently. There have been many Mexican books for the younger group but this will satisfy those slightly older.
