A dossier on heresy hunting in radio and T.V. (much of which formed the background for The Troubled Air) which is an exact examination of the reactions and repercussions which resulted from Red Channels, the black (red) listing of some 150 individuals. This investigation, which was sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union, extended to advertising executives, agents, networks, columnists, government officials, etc. as well as the listees- all of whose testimony is given here in a direct quote. And from the big name cases which involved Jean Muir, the Fredric Marches, etc. which hit the newspapers, to those less knowns in which names- and fames- were branded by a sheet published by three men with no authority (as one executive said- ""three gents have the whole dame industry stymied"") this is a terrible exposure and indictment. And the irresponsible zeal of the publishers of Red Channels, the cowardice of business which yielded to the pressure, and the tragedy of the stigma of untouchable as it destroyed careers and income, all this demands public interest and indignation- more than it will probably receive.
