FARM BOY

A trimmer, crisper, less pretentious second outing from the author of The Day of the Waxing Moon, 1965. Here, we meet Connecticut small-town psychiatrist Lucille Esker and her nice, ambitious ex-husband, state trooper Lieutenant Dave Littlejohn. Local bad-boy Billy Durk has been found shot dead near the prison farm where his brother Colin is serving time for the murder of their brutal father. And there's no paucity of motive here: one of Lucille's patients, teen-aged Allison Echinger, was raped by Billy (a secret that's probably triggered the girl's depression); Billy tried to blackmail gay set-designer Ellis Somersand and aging lecher Garrison Craig, along with the rich New York Farnols, who made a porn movie with handsome Billy and sweet Sally, granddaughter of the town's real-estate millionaire, Andy McLeod. While Dave struggles to keep the D.A.'s office from railroading Colin for the killing, Lucille tries to decide just how much of her patient's history to reveal. In the end, though, Dave's solid sleuthing prevails in a low-keyed, steadily absorbing story.
