HESTER AND THE GNOMES

A fey story by an English author who already has her following, this is simply written and has a tame charm in its portrayal of a world of little people and a world of big. Hester, who lives on a farm, meets the gnomes when her father decides to drill a well and the break through accidentally hits the land of the Great River Torg. Disturbed at the affront the gnomes send their President, Chancellor, and a few hangers on to the upper world where they run into Hester and her cats. All soon find they have a common language and as the funny problems are solved one by one, the gnomes decide to make their new home in an oak tree. Not as clever or as subtle as Mary Norton's The Borrowers but with the attraction of minicule niceties.
