LONG AGO IN FLORENCE: The Story of the della Robbia Sculpture

Very wisely, Miss Downer has chosen to feature examples of della Robbia sculpture in American museums, so this pleasant introduction to a rather remote topic may find a niche in New York, Buffalo, Boston, Detroit and environs. Otherwise the account of Luca's quest for a simple, inexpensive material to supplement marble and bronze, of his development of a glaze for dull terracotta, is likely to remain remote. Luca's love for children and his training of nephew Andrea to carry on his work fill out the brief narrative. Whether the several statues of Madonna and Child, the two of swathed infants, and a few others will appeal to children as much as they do to adults is another question. It is, however, appreciative without being fatuous, and the information is appropriate for the average child at the age level.
