THE FIFTEENTH PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH

When Mr. Spry announces that his company is sending the family to London for a year, eight-year-old Kathy is thrilled until she discovers that she can't take her beloved cat, Romeo. Peanut-butter sandwiches help Kathy concentrate; her first one sparks the idea of writing to Queen Elizabeth to ask her to stretch the rules. The answer is no--as is the one to Kathy's next proposal: that she stay home and be rented out, along with Romeo and the family house. Kathy goes through quite a few sandwiches as she tries other possibilities. Finally, while sharing the 15th sandwich with elderly Mrs. Welk, Kathy finds a neat solution to her problem, as well as a new friend. Though this is a slight incident on which to pin a story, Kaplan manages a credible, well-paced tale with characters of substance, and with the relationship between Kathy and her cat affectionately portrayed. McKeating's b&w illustrations capture the spirit of suburbia.
