BOUBOUKAR

An Arab orphan who had never known human kindness is deeply stirred by the warm attention of an American lady whose plane lands in the primitive Sahara oasis of In Fallah. Ostracized, except for the companionship of a half-starved dog, Bouboukar longs to attend school and be accepted by other boys. With the French money the woman impulsively bestows on Bouboukar, the astonished child sets out to fulfull his dream. But new clothes on a beggar boy arouse community suspicion and makes Bouboukar the most likely suspect in a robbery. Again through the benevolent lady's help, the victimized child is freed, adopted by a childless Arab family and given the dignity he sorely needs. The aura of an oasis market place, an Arab court of justice and accepted poverty emerges with candor and color. The story itself never attains realistic human dimensions.
