BEFORE THE DELUGE

The late 1870's, and the activities of assorted Russians, in their persu well as their political lives, in intimate accounting that is woven in with actual and personalities. Through the odyssey of Mamontov, a young painter, political dilet and his love for circus performer, Katia, through the marriage of the Dummlers and their subservience to Alexander II, through the subversive workings of nihilits, anarchists, and in continental wanderings and happenings, the trends of the times, and the thinking typical of the many levels of society, are exposed. From a royal marriage between the Russian Grand Duchess Maria to the Duke of Edinburgh, son of Victoria, the Congress of Berlin and the assassination of Alexander II, this follows the ebb and flow of incipient revolution, the conditioning of a break with tradition. In a literary, medical, historical, political, biographical roll call, this is a round robin of Russian and international personalities and situations that is a vivid recreation of the past.
