Reads well enough, this third in a series of semi-intellectualized intrigue tales, smoothly handled but unevenly exciting (Danger Road and The Broken Circle). This one involves an American Cliveden set, social, conservative, anti-government, headed by a Senator and his mistress. Against his will, Bill, gentleman farmer, is sucked into an undercover attempt to get facts on Senator Durliner, and works on the case with attractive Ellen Tindall. The two filch their evidence but are recognized in so doing; they have a long, tense time of it evading Durliner and his men, but eventually snag an electoral scheme which would jeopardize the country.
