SPORTS HERO: JOHNNY BENCH

Short declarative sentences and extra large print limn the quick rise of catcher Johnny Bench to, and with, the Big Red Machine. The action is interrupted only by the several accidents which have threatened his career and by passing mention of Johnny's tendency to get ""cocky"" and his fondness for discotheques. Photographs of his childhood home and major league action lend a grown-up look, though Paul Frame's primerish drawings are condescending to even those very youngest readers for whom this is intended.
