Interestingly detailed story -- a period, regional novel for the teens, backgrounded by central Pennsylvania during the Civil War. The lives of the characters feel the impact of war- a degree of awareness of the outer world, but the main interest lies in the daily life of a real family, actually developed from childhood memories of stories of the region west of Harrisburg and bearing the authenticity and charm of factual reminiscences -- loving memories of pleasant, wholesome people. There's young and poignant love affair which ends with the death in action of the young minister engaged to the heroine, but there is a happy ending, a look to the future.
