The curator of the Waiters Art Gallery, Baltimore, which houses the Miller collection, supplies an excellent biographical commentary, while the 200 water colors here reproduced (in half tone, with a frontispiece in color) are accompanied by the notes Miller made at the time. He has left this incomparable record of the day of the mountain man and the plain Indian, when he journeyed from New Orleans to St. Louis and west, as artist accompanying an Englishman, Sir William Drummond Stewart, in 1837. Here are his Indians of the plains, chieftains, squaws, warriors; here are the trappers, the men of the caravan; here are buffalo and other wild game; here are Indian encampments; here are scenes from the untamed country they traversed.
