A sunny late Victorian romance in which a good-natured gel finds her man and some modest adventure. Patient, sensible Cecily is put upon as her mother's lady's maid and nurse to the younger children. While down the lane, austere and rich widower Charles Pitborough, who has mulled over the welfare of his small daughter, decides to make a reasonable business offer to Cecily--marriage in exchange for management of the manse and care of the child. It takes weeks of parrying and a trip to Italy to bring about the most suitable, happy union. Comforting for any lady's chamber, or for that matter, subway ride.
