THE WOLF

I've seen only the English edition in sober format and dated pictures for this story of a recent miracle, associated with St. John Bosco, who lived from 1815 to 1888 and was canonized in 1933. But the story has its own sort of enchantment, as it is told by a grandmother to her granddaughter on a wintry day. She thinks back to a four day trial of her childhood, when the good saints stood by three children and a sick grandmother, isolated by a blizzard. Johnny, the youngest, was visited by a strange wolf-like creature, and sent by him a message for help. His faith never wavered- and help came- and the mystery of the strange creature was never explained, unless it could be the wolf-dog that appeared in emergency when John Bosco needed him.
