Another well-crafted, easy-to-take entertainment from an author (The Gift Horse, etc,) who rarely disappoints. May Lockett found peace and a new life as right-hand woman to Miss Winthrop, Provincetown hotel owner, when she ran away from her New York job and unfaithful, conniving musician husband Cosmo Fane. Now, almost 30 years later, still legally married, she has inherited the hotel and runs it happily and profitably--until her serenity is shattered by the appearance of Cosine, reduced to playing piano in a local restaurant, with some drug-running on the side. He's still attractive to women, still with an eye on the main chance, which soon translates into a partnership with May. His desperate victim responds with desperate measures, but virtue triumphs in the end, to the reader's delight. Lots of Provincetown atmosphere, charm and suspense--top-of-the line McMullen.
