THE HOUNDS OF HELL: Stories of Canine Horror and Fantasy

A companion collection to Beware of the Cat (1972) -- fanged horror stories where more often than not there are elements of the supernatural. The eminent contributors include, almost obligatorily, H. O. Lovecraft and Ambrose Bierce, and are joined by Turgenev and de Maupassant whose ""Vendetta"" is a more human reprisal; Saki's Pomeranian, swathed in a shawl, who only snaps is the only pet around; Ray Bradbury's scavenger dog, the ""Emissary"" of a youngster, hails from his October Country and there's a Faulkner poor white who kills a man only to be undone by his omnipresent hound; and an Agatha Christie, Fritz Leiber, Robert Bloch -- among the best known represented here. Literate hellbent, spellbent stuff.
