MICHELANGELO

A fine biography of the great artist, this is also a full, vital and colorful account of the Renaissance in which he lived and of the giants, the near-greats and the rogues who peopled it. The ugly, lonely boy possessed of only one interest- that of his art-grows up in the Florence of Lorenzo the Magnificent where the perpetual gaieties and festivals kept the people in a state of continual intoxication of spirit- is misunderstood by his family, befriended by Lorenzo and set on his never-deviating path to immortality. Later, there is Venice, Bologna and Rome, his intermittent home for many years where he created the Moses, vindicated his reputation as a painter in the Sistine Chapel, and in his honored old age completed the plans for Saint Peter's. Of general biographical interest which will not be limited to the field of art.
