This first picture book by a teacher of children's literature is an entertaining excursion into the world of a small person's imagination. Snuggle Piggy's Aunt Daisy, with whom he lives, has made him a very special blanket on which she ires appliquÉd many wonderful creatures in a Noah's Ark theme. What Aunt Daisy doesn't know is that when Snuggle Piggy is put to bed, the creatures come alive, playing with him and teaching him to dance. One night, disaster strikes. Aunt Daisy washes the blanket and hangs it out to dry, but leaves it out because a rainstorm has made it too wet to take to bed. Snuggle Piggy, worried about his creatures, summons up the courage to run outside and bring in the drenched blanket. The creatures warm themselves by the fire and, next morning, Snuggle Piggy finds them back on the blanket, with the addition of a bright yellow sun and a rainbow. This is a simple story with a strong appeal to the imagination and a gentle, reassuring ending. The plot, while original, has the familiar feel of a hundred bedtime stories, but still holds its appeal. Himmelman depicts Snuggle Piggy with huge, popping eyes, off-putting at first but his small, determined face takes on character as the story progresses in brightly colored images. A nice little addition to the bedtime shelf.
