THE BLUE BALLOON

As a little boy and his winsome dog play with an unusual balloon, young ""readers"" have the fun of pages that unfold or flap open to show not only how truly enormous the balloon can become--but also how it can bear him aloft or burst into rainbow colors. This imaginative celebration of a favorite toy's many splendors received special mention from a jury of children in Bologna (""Critici in Erba""); it's easy to see why Inkpen's simple, expressive illustrations and clever paper engineering had special appeal for them.
