A story, with atmosphere, pathos and happiness, of a South Georgia boy, Jeb, and his growing-up experiences. Some of the things that stand out in Jeb's life on the ocean flats are his father's insistence that he sell his inefficient but loved log, Sawbuck; the routing of a gang of arsonists in the nearby town; the starting of a school of forestry that Jeb finally consents to attend -- though he has many misgivings about the reasons behind his father's chopping down the pines he himself had tended Contrasts of moods and happenings are excellent, Miss Powell's prose is often the lyrical essence of the south Georgia talk of her characters whose lives and figures she etches well. There is definitely something of The Yearling quality here.
