STRIDING SLIPPERS

To ease his work, a shepherd weaves himself a wonderful pair of striding slippers--a single step and he's across the field; and this traces the progress of the slippers from the time a passing stranger steals them from the shepherd. They are snitched again, then change hands twice more, and everyone who puts them on is sorry-for all the wearers are carried beyond their destinations and their slippered feet continue to thrash even after they fall. But finally the last of the hapless cheats is propelled back into the shepherd's field where the slippers' rightful owner takes them back--""and never in his life felt tired again."" A simple, amusing Udmurt (Eastern Soviet) version of the dancing slippers motif, told with agility--though illustrated with a great deal of huffing and puffing.
