THE NIGHT IT RAINED PANCAKES

If you can use more joke-type folk tales turned out in easy-reader form, you can probably amuse beginning readers with this version of a familiar ploy. Here farmer Ivan finds a pot of gold but fears his simple brother Stepan will blab and the landlord will demand the gold. So Ivan goes about hanging pancákes on trees, putting a fish in his rabbit trap and vice versa, just so when Stepan does tell of the gold it will be dismissed as one more pipe dream. Aside from the difference in dress (which puts Ivan in a most unlikely plowing outfit), Florian's crude cartoons make both brothers look equally simple.
