THE SEVEN(apple) SINS OF STACEY KENDALL

Seven(apple) Sins because that is the number of sixth-grade gifts Stacey Kendall ""mutilates"" in the girls' room at school. It all begins when pretty, popular Jill Williams has her ears pierced. The other girls are impressed, and Stacey finds herself bragging that she's having hers done for her twelfth birthday, that week. But Stacey's libber mother, who disapproves of Stacey's interest in beauty books, won't consider it. So Stacey does her own ears--and then, to pay for a send-away Bust-er Sizer, she sets up a piercing business in the girls' room. The eighth girl gets only one ear done before the bell rings (thus the ""seven(apple)""), and later that ear develops an infection. Another girl's mother reports Stacey, and soon the award-winning model student is in trouble with her mother, the principal, and the other girls. Of course Stacey eventually learns that beauty is, as her mother says, only skin deep. (No doubt her mother is being more subtle than she otherwise appears when she refers to Stacey's beloved teacher as ""that poor woman"" because ""she is so unattractive."") It's not much of a revelation, and the story isn't much different from many others; but as such light incidents go, Hopper's flows along readably.
