In highly irregular free verse and pleasantly frieze-like pictures, a calendar of obscure Elizabethan Christmas beliefs and observances that are likely to remain obscure to most children. Typically difficult syntactically, and anyhow needing adult interpretation, is ""To Barbara saint all cry full fast/ Whose work is in some dangerous craft,/And make full merry,/ For 'tis Yule."" To the already demanding vocabulary (roiled, trows) is added Uncommon usage (dower as a verb), elisions (guised for disguised, tires for attires), and what-have-yous (hunsupping), And while words may be explained, there's no way 'round the awkwardness of reading this aloud.
