THE KING OF THE RAINY COUNTRY

Inspector van der Valk of the Amsterdam police plods over the plain, but fast, trail of an absconding middle-aged millionaire whose baggage includes a missing German teenage beauty. Her murder/his suicide and the forced shades of Mayerling are without the reader empathy Freeling has generated so well before (see Because of the Cats, Love in Amsterdam). The solution is talked out in an anti-climactic ending.
