Lille police commissaire Henri Castang (Not as Far as Velma, 1989) is now shunted off to Paris and the quiet recesses of an art-fraud squad, but his life, as ever, remains tumultuous: his Czech wife Vera is almost raped; he has trouble extricating himself from an affair with his shyly attractive supervisor; and famous TV personality/scholar/ and teacher Dampierre, at his daughter Lydia's lycÉe, is fond of fondling his special students. How to catch him at it? Castang's tenant, a Russian-bred filmmaker, agrees to tutor Lydia in wiles-she will be the bait--but, meanwhile, there are purloined stamps to be found, forgeries in Leningrad to be discreetly unattributed, and an American financier's treasures to be escorted to a French exhibit, In the end, of course, Castang will once again ruffle too many important feathers, leading to yet another transfer. Notable for its very French bourgeoisie perspective and insights, but sluggishly plotted and awkwardly written.
