A grim reproduction of a hate monger, which follows his virulent rise to power in loathsome and lascivious detail. Gasper D. Splane, who had served briefly under the Senator (Huey Long), a shill and deadbeat, wanders across the country to Los Angeles where he attaches himself to Ma Kinderwall, an evangelist, as a promoter- and attaches a Reverend to his own name. Ma's distrust-and at times distaste- for Splane is balanced off by a certain attraction- and the money he brings in. But before long Splane uses the position he has acquired to deliver a rabble rousing address with which he achieves national notoriety and the backing of an industrialist. The violence he spews stirs up a race riot in the midwest, he escapes -- just barely- with his life, and accepts the only alternative open to him an offer to go to South America... A foul- and often foul mouthed life drawing, with only the virtue of verisimilitude.
