DUSTY

Dusty, a stray cat, first appears on a rainy night and though she won't come in (""Mama said she was wild and lived outside""), she takes the food put out for her. Dusty comes back each night that week, eating selectively but becoming more trusting with each visit, and finally when her paw has been cut (""Mama said she had a fight with an animal"") she comes to stay. Even then she's in and out independently, unpredictably, until at the end of the summer she takes off for good (""Mama says it was just her time to go""). Langner's text conveys the approved message with a bare minimum of art; her soft pencil drawings give the little girl who cares for Dusty a dopey look (presumably deliberate) and, not so deliberately, make the cat awkwardly unfeline.
