THE CUCKOO CALLS

Modern Finland, before the Russian usurpation of 1940, is the setting for a story that combines local color, excitement and fun in due measure. Best of all, the characters are alive, and Matti, the boy whose curiosity and ideas are always getting him into trouble, is a character seen in three dimensions. The two children who motivate the story get involved in a mill strike and in the problem of the relations between Finns and Swedes. History and patriotism play their part, but are incidental to the story itself. A skillfully handled plot, with plenty of action and suspense, and an element of mystery.
