THE LAST ASSIGNMENT

Rare book dealer Nigel Morrison gets something of more current interest -- the inflammatory memoir of a former prominent Gaullist which sets off blackmail, the kidnapping of a diplomat, and a killing -- but best of all it gives Nigel a second chance with the gift whom he had misguidedly permitted to escape him in the first of his three appearances. Softer-pedaled suspense but the setting, Paris and environs, is agreeable enough.
