A lot has happened in Tennessee, and a lot is happening, and this book brings the state's past and present into a direct and deserved focus. Known as the ""volunteer state"" its willingness to fight for the furthering of the nation, it has offered such men as Jackson, Polk, Johnson. It had its own badmen, the ""terrible Harps"", its own ""War of Roses"" -- a political campaign between the Taylor brothers. The author gives the history of the state from its setting to the present. He discusses its music and its monkey trial, its vacationiand possibilities, its social customs past and present, its TVA and CCC, its Oak Ridge, and its current politicians, including Estes Kefauver. Tennessee has been a proving ground for legislation in regard to evolution, and it is now one for the two largest and most important government projects active in the nation today and affecting people in new areas. It is still a pioneer state, and it is progressing in many ways, as good deal of space is leveled to the Smak, Mountain region as a vacationland. Here is history in a pleasant amount, tell with pleasant humor.
