Here's a book by a man who knows his subject, which yet makes the uninitiated feel that there is some excuse for likes and dislikes not based on fundamental art values. It's a sort of stepping stones to art appreciation, and one is infected by the man's enthusiasms, and led, almost unconsciously, into building, bit by bit, a theory of aesthetics which helps for greater understanding and a more intelligent approach to the great pictures of the world. He has selected thirty-two as illustrations of his points, paintings of varying types and periods, hanging in galleries in all parts of the western world. The book is a beautiful piece of book-making, and an ideal gift book for anyone remotely interested in art.
