MIKE AND PSMITH

Are you the Bully, the Pride of the School, or the Boy who is Led Astray and takes to drink in Chapter Sixteen?"" asks (silent P) Psmith, one of the outstanding reasons Mike at Sedleigh is more fun and easier to follow than Mike at Wrykyn (p. 1177, J-453). Paternally plucked from the better school because of his poor report, Mike opts (at Psmith's suggestion) for archaeology instead of cricket because playing up to Outwood the ""fossil fancier"" is a way to greener pastures -- and beyond. Three seasons older, he still has the same knack for being noticed at the wrong moments and the same irrestible spontaneity and quick thinking. Some kids might prefer to find Mike on the adult shelves and adopt him for themselves; in any case, he will amuse and be remembered.
