Developed communities of condominiums, ""marinas,"" and apartment complexes outnumber the natural stone farmhouses and fishing villages, but the authors try to offer alternatives for those who prefer to get away from it all. Prices hover between $10,000 and $50,000, but the sky is the limit for chateaux, palazzi, castles. Best of all, the Brooks' manage to capture enough local color (it changes from one Caribbean island to its neighbor) to help a tentative buyer decide where to begin his search for that Shangri-La with a lower rate of inflation than here at home.
