A rare look at Nicaragua's new president (Violeta Chamorro) and at the outspoken newspaper (La Prensa) and family she now leads. Edmisten (Education/Univ. of West Florida) met Mrs. Chamorro--who appears here more as a concerned hostess than as a future leader of her country--in 1985 in Nicaragua. The focus of the book, however, is the courageous life of Mrs. Chamorro's husband, Pedro Joaquin, whose struggle for a free and democratic Nicaragua brought him to torture and to death, apparently at the hands of pro-Somoza forces, in 1978--but also to a high moral standard that, Edmisten intimates, holds considerable sway over Mrs. Chamorro. Edmisten's study, though slight (142 pp.), is valuable then as one of the very few available sources of information about Nicaragua's new leader and her heritage.
