The purpose of this book is to explore the development of the major creeds by which the Church has confessed its faith through the centuries. The author brings to his task the unusual combination of exacting scholarship and an ability to make ancient documents and the background out of which they sprang come alive for today's readers. Dr. Fuhrmann thus interprets in turn the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed, the Waldensian Declaration of Faith, the Augsburg Confession, the French Reformed Declaration of Faith and the Westminister Confession. As many a worshipper of today is puzzled by what seems to him archaic phraseology in these statements of faith, a book like this will at least explain how the creeds happened to be worded as they are and may prove a guide to understanding and appreciation of these ancient documents.
