SQUARELY BEHIND THE BEAVERS

Report from the Village -- Durham, New Hampshire -- where Philbrook Paine is feature writer for a paper ""editorially for the beavers, mothers, dogs and fireflies"", a happy reversal from Boston commuterdom. Random jottings let us in on the reportorial doings, whether writing up lonely vigils of others or making news by a devastating attempt to rough it in the winter woods. Also shared are memories of some spectacular Ayrshire cows recalled with bittersweet relish; the renovation of the family seat, Shankhassick; the restoration of a formidable Franklin; the oddities of life in a college town and the oddest notion of all to the seasoned inhabitants of a quaint village remarking on the passage of time and friends -- ""perhaps now ve is de characters"". While Mr. Paine can occasionally whip up a Texan type enthusiasm for his state, his stance is in the main a bit too relaxed to carry the spirit far across state lines or much beyond Boston.
