A gold rush story and a pretty good one, by the winner of the 1938 Julia Ellsworth Ford Foundation prize book, Hello, The Boat. This lacks the zest of adventure that book had, because it is such a many-times-traveled road, this wagon trail to California. Pack Woods, orphan, runs away from his aunt in Arkansas, joins the Arkansas Travelers, and spends seven months on the Southern route, via New Mexico and Arizona, meeting up with the Marcy Expedition and Cooks wagon route, and eventually reaching California, only to find that wealth was not there for the picking. At the last, the conclusion is rushed -- he will find his gold in converting the land into fertile soil, and taking up agriculture, in the district east of Stockton.
