LOVE ME, LOVE ME NOT

An author with keen and sympathetic discernment and a real understanding of the problems of young people handles here the different approach of three girls to romance. The central figure is a girl from a small town, living with two others in Chicago, and getting (too easily perhaps) a job in the book department of what is probably supposed to be Marshall Field's. One of the trio is a society girl with a beau in every port- a heart-breaker, who can't be satisfied with her conquests and goes on to greener fields. The third girl is over-efficient, absorbed in her job- and predestined to wear the trousers when it comes to marriage. There's plenty of incident; the characterizations are sound; the situations more or less typical. But the build up of the central theme is rather halting and carries less conviction, has less impact than many of Miss Whitney's earlier books. Surely popular however (and this despite an unpleasing jacket).
