Online guides for children are proliferating, but Gralla's, subtitled ""A Young Surfer's Guide to Cyberspace,"" may be the best so far--a compendium of basic information on the major online services, the World Wide Web, chat, newsgroups, and e-mail, along with extensive listings of high-quality sites with descriptions, rated according to usefulness and coolness, and organized by topic. This is a straightforward treatment (despite an overuse of the words cool and neat), in which the author eschews any extended surfing metaphors and too-cute cartoon characters in favor of treating kids intelligently. Although the rating system is of limited use, Gralla's descriptions of the sites are informative and helpfully critical. He has located many truly great sites, including quite a few not covered in other books. A must-have for classroom and family use.
