THE POLAR ROUTE TO TIME GONE BY

I am an extremely antiquated citizen, writing in part (I trust not wholly) for others of my ilk."" That about sums up the nature of this travelogue that reads as though Mr. Duffus were reminiscing (at length) about every shot in a feature length home movie. The effect is, occasionally, as enervating. But older readers will probably empathize with the Duffuses as they go from Oakland, California to Amsterdam, take a five day cruise up the Rhine, visit Germany, Switzerland, Austria and go back to Holland chatting along the way about castles, cowbells, and cathedrals. And giving pertinent asides on history as well as themselves--""We three tourists wound up the day with a rousing game of anagrams which my wife, as usual, won."" For other ""rousing game of anagrams"" enthusiasts.
